The day

How does the day work?

Your instructor explains the basics on shore before gear fitting and practice in the lagoon lead into the guided dive.

  1. 1
    Safety briefing

The session begins with the basic safety information for a first scuba dive. Your instructor explains what happens before you get into the water.

  2. 2
    Gear fitting

The instructor fits the scuba equipment to each diver before moving into the lagoon. Each session has a maximum of four divers.

  3. 3
    Shallow-water practice

You practice the skills in shallow water until the group feels comfortable. Your instructor stays with the group during preparation.

  4. 4
    Guided dive and videos

Your instructor leads the dive through Magic Island Lagoon and records underwater video. Fish are part of the setting, with other marine life possible.

The guided underwater portion takes 20 to 30 minutes. Briefing and practice bring the full session to 60 to 90 minutes. You finish at the lagoon's left beach.

Pickup and meeting point

  • Beach meeting point: Scuba Lounge sets up on the left side of Magic Island Lagoon's beach. There isn't a separate shop to visit first.
  • Getting there: You park or get dropped off in the lot at the park entrance. The rest of the route is on foot along the path to the lagoon.
  • Check-in window: Arrive at the beach 30 minutes before your session. Check-in closes 15 minutes before the booked start, so your walk needs to fit ahead of that.
  • Phone and swimwear: Bring your phone for the video transfer after the dive. You'll also need swimwear and a towel, with sunscreen for the time on shore.

Before you book

  • Book this if you want a first dive with fewer people sharing the session. You don't need prior scuba experience.

Fit

Is this tour right for you?

The four-diver limit suits a couple trying scuba who want fewer people sharing the session. You don't need a diving certificate. Children can join from age 10. Your time includes practice before a 20 to 30-minute guided dive, so the whole session isn't spent exploring.

Try Scuba Diving works if you want friends to watch from shore without tickets, from $89 per person for divers. For individual skills instruction before a boat-based reef dive, Dive Oahu costs from $270.36 per adult.

Means: Book the noon slot for a first dive with no more than four participants while keeping your morning free.

Who it's not for

  • Children younger than 10
  • Parties needing more than four places in one slot
  • Pregnant travelers
  • Travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health

Good to know

Know before you go

Age and party

Participants must be at least 10, and one slot holds four divers at most. You can book fewer places. A larger family can't fit into a single session under this group limit.

Equipment fit

Above 250 lb, an in-person gear fitting may be needed before participation. Weight isn't the only fit issue. Check this before paying so your planned dive doesn't depend on untested equipment fit.

Early check-in

The check-in window opens 30 minutes before your session and closes 15 minutes before it. Complete the waiver ahead of arrival. Your walk from the park entrance needs to finish before that cutoff.

Your belongings

A lockbox at the dive site holds bags and personal belongings. Your phone is needed afterward for the video transfer. A towel and swimwear are yours to bring, while scuba gear is supplied.

Cameras and glasses

Beginners can't carry their own camera during this dive. The instructor records video for you. Prescription glasses won't fit under the mask, so contacts or a suitable prescription mask need consideration before arrival.

Cancellation and health

Canceling at least 24 hours before departure qualifies for a full refund, with no refund later. Pregnancy makes the activity unsuitable. Spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health are also reasons to skip it.
