The day

How does the day work?

You meet at Eisenhower Beach for a board fitting and sand practice before coached surfing in the ocean.

  1. 1
    Find the beach tents

Your instructor meets you at Eisenhower Beach, also called Kalaeloa Beach Park. The tents mark the school's beach meeting point.

  2. 2
    Board fitting

The instructor chooses a board for you. Your introduction begins on the beach before you take that board into the ocean.

  3. 3
    Practice on the sand

You practice paddling and standing on the sand. The land lesson comes before you walk into the water with your board to try catching waves.

  4. 4
    Coached surfing

Your instructor stays in the water to help with timing. You work on when to paddle and when to stand as you practice catching waves.

The activity lasts 75 minutes and includes a 1-hour surf lesson. It ends at the beach location reached through the Coral Sea Road gate.

Pickup and meeting point

  • Road approach: The route follows Coral Sea Road past Tripoli Road. The cattle guard gate is on your left as you approach the meeting beach.
  • Parking and beach access: Keep your car outside the gate and walk through its left side. The Surf HNL tents are straight ahead on the beach.
  • Your transport: You arrange both journeys to and from Eisenhower Beach. This option doesn't include a Waikiki or Ko Olina hotel transfer, so the lesson begins at the beach.

Before you book

  • Plan your own journey to the beach. This booking doesn't include hotel pickup.

Fit

Is this tour right for you?

Ko Olina guests aged 12 and up can take the group lesson near Barbers Point. You arrange your own ride to the beach. The 75-minute activity includes an hour of instruction. It's a fit for a morning on the west side with at most four students per instructor.

If you're staying in Waikiki, Ohana's shared hour includes designated pickup from $104.66 per person for 2 or more. For a child aged 4, Manifesting Aloha offers an individual lesson by the Hilton Hawaiian Village lagoon from $160 per person.

  • Children under 5 in any of these options

Good to know

Know before you go

Age by format

Group lessons start at 12 and private bookings at 5, with moderate fitness required. The activity isn't recommended during pregnancy. Travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health should also choose another activity.

Personal beach items

Your swimsuit and towel aren't supplied by Surf HNL. Bring sunscreen and drinking water too. Your board and reef shoes are provided, so you don't need a separate equipment rental.

Group instruction

The group option is for parties of 4 or more. Each instructor takes no more than 4 students. A reservation can hold up to 9 travelers, so the booking limit isn't the number assigned to one instructor.

Ocean conditions

Surf HNL's instructors monitor the surf and weather. The lesson begins on sand with safety and technique instruction. Your preparation is part of the session before you enter the ocean.

Gate and parking

On Coral Sea Road beyond Tripoli Road, the cattle-guard gate is on your left. You park outside and walk through the left side toward the beach. The Surf HNL tents mark the meeting area.

Booking terms

The reservation receives immediate approval with a mobile ticket. You can cancel at least 24 hours before starting for a full refund. Later cancellations don't receive a refund, so the cutoff matters for changes to your plans.

Questions

People also ask

  • How long is Surf HNL's Barbers Point surf lesson?

The activity takes 75 minutes and includes a 1-hour surf lesson. Preparation on the sand is part of the instruction before ocean practice. Plan your own travel and parking time outside that activity window.

  • Can a younger child take Surf HNL's Barbers Point lesson?

Yes, private bookings accept children from age 5. The group option starts at age 12, so younger children need a different format. You shouldn't use the adult group rate when planning a child's private lesson.

  • How many students share an instructor at Surf HNL?

No more than 4 students share each instructor. The group option is for parties of 4 or more, while a booking can include up to 9 travelers. You don't put everyone in that larger reservation with a single instructor.

  • Does the Surf HNL Barbers Point booking include hotel pickup?

No, you arrange your own journey to Eisenhower Beach at Kalaeloa Beach Park. The 75-minute activity begins there, with parking outside the gate on Coral Sea Road. You walk from the gate to the Surf HNL tents.

  • What should you bring to Surf HNL at Barbers Point?

You need your own swimsuit and towel for the 75-minute activity. Sunscreen and drinks aren't supplied either. Wear swimwear before arriving, since the provided rash guard and reef shoes are lesson gear rather than your full beach kit.
