The day

How does the day work?

Your Punaluu lesson starts with equipment and beach instruction before the group practices in the ocean.

  1. 1
    Meet in Punaluu

The school meets you on the northeast coast and gets your equipment ready. Your lesson starts here before the group moves into beach instruction.

  2. 2
    Beach lesson

The first 15 minutes are taught on the beach. This gives you an introduction before you head into the water for the rest of the class.

  3. 3
    Beginner wave practice

The ocean session focuses on catching beginner waves. You're learning with the school after the beach briefing, using the equipment supplied for your lesson.

The 90-minute class includes the 15-minute beach lesson. You finish at the same Punaluu meeting location.

Pickup and meeting point

  • Meeting address: Your destination is 53-360 Kamehameha Highway in Punaluu. The directions from Waikiki or the west side use H-3 toward the island's east side.
  • Required call: Check arrangements by phone with the school 24 hours before your lesson. Missing this required call can lead to cancellation without a refund.
  • Your transport: There's no hotel shuttle to the meeting point. You arrange the outward and return journeys, with an adult accompanying any surfer under 18.

Before you book

  • Plan your own ride to Punaluu. Hotel pickup isn't included.

Fit

Is this tour right for you?

A weekday stay on the windward side suits this 90-minute Punaluu lesson. You won't need to travel to Haleiwa for it. The small group has three to five students and includes a turtle tour. Children from age 4 need an accompanying adult until they're 18.

For a lesson based in Haleiwa, North Shore Surf Girls offers 2 hours of semi-private instruction from $199.90 per person. Ohana's open group includes designated Waikiki pickup for swimmers aged 13 and up, from $104.66 per person for 2 or more.

Means: Book the 10:30 a.m. small group for a weekday introduction in Punaluu with three to five students.

Who it's not for

  • Visitors available only on weekends
  • Minors attending without an adult
  • Travelers needing included hotel transport

Good to know

Know before you go

Children and adults

The bookable age band starts at 4. Anyone under 18 must come with an adult, and the lesson needs moderate fitness. Your child's place doesn't remove that accompaniment rule.

Packing for Punaluu

You get a board and rash guard for the session, with a leash included too. Wear your swimsuit and pack a towel. Food and drinks aren't supplied, so bring your own water.

The required call

You must phone the school 24 hours before your tour date to arrange the final details. Skipping that call can cost you the lesson without a refund. A mobile ticket doesn't replace the call.

Group numbers

Small-group lessons have 3 to 5 students, while the large-group option needs at least 6. A session can be canceled if enrollment is too low. In that case, you're offered an alternative or full refund.

Your journey

The meeting address is 53-360 Kamehameha Highway in Punaluu. You arrange transportation there and back. The school directs drivers from Waikiki or the west side toward the H-3 route to the windward coast.

Last-minute bookings

Bookings made within 1 day of starting need the school's later approval. Weather can cause cancellation too. Your own cancellation earns a full refund at least 24 hours ahead, with none inside that deadline.

People also ask

  • Do you have to call Sunset Suzy before your surf lesson?

Yes, a phone call 24 hours before the tour date is required. You can lose the booking without a refund if you skip it. Keep that call in your plans even when you already have a ticket.

  • How long is Sunset Suzy's Punaluu surf lesson?

The surf class runs for 90 minutes with 15 minutes of beach instruction at the beginning. You then practice in the ocean. A turtle tour is included too, though its separate timing isn't specified.

  • Can children take Sunset Suzy's surf lesson?

Yes, tickets start at age 4. Children under 18 need an accompanying adult, and participants need moderate fitness. You can choose a private or semi-private format if the small-group arrangement doesn't suit your family.

  • Does Sunset Suzy provide transportation from Waikiki?

No, you need your own ride to 53-360 Kamehameha Highway in Punaluu. Hotel pickup and drop-off aren't included. Plan your return journey too, because the lesson ends at its windward meeting location.

  • What happens if Sunset Suzy's group doesn't fill?

You can be offered an alternative or a full refund if minimum enrollment isn't reached. The small-group format has 3 to 5 students. An individual reservation doesn't guarantee the session has enough people to operate.
