The day

How does the day work?

You meet your firefighter instructor at the Duke statue before learning on the sand and entering the Waikiki surf.

  1. 1
    Duke statue meeting

Your instructor meets your party at the Duke Paoa Kahanamoku statue. There's a beach lesson before you enter the water for your first attempts.

  2. 2
    Paddling and standing

Beach practice covers paddling and balance. You practice the movement used to stand, with safety and surf etiquette covered too.

  3. 3
    Guided wave attempts

Once you're ready, the lesson moves into the water. Your instructor guides the board and coaches you through attempts to catch and ride waves.

The 1-hour session includes the land lesson and water practice. It finishes at the same Duke Kahanamoku statue meeting point.

Pickup and meeting point

  • Where to meet: The meeting landmark is the Duke Kahanamoku statue. Your surf instructor meets you there ready to begin the lesson.
  • Travel arrangements: Plan your journey to the statue around your booked start. Private transportation isn't included, and there's no hotel collection on this option.

Before you book

  • Check each surfer's ticket band before booking. Children are ages 7 to 11, and youths are 12 to 17.

Fit

Is this tour right for you?

A party of three or four adults qualifies for the starting adult rate on this 1-hour lesson. You get instruction from Hawaii firefighters. Children can take part from age 7. It's suited to friends who want their own group and can meet at the Duke statue.

For starts every 30 minutes, Oahu Surf and Skim costs from $85 per adult for 3 or more. Manifesting Aloha gives children aged 4 to 11 a tandem option with their own instructor, from $160 per person.

Means: Book the private hour for your own party if learning with Hawaii firefighters is the reason you're choosing this lesson.

Who it's not for

  • Children under 7
  • Parties needing more than four places in one booking
  • Travelers requiring hotel pickup

Good to know

Know before you go

Ages and health

Lessons begin at age 7. This activity isn't recommended during pregnancy. Spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health are also reasons to choose a different activity.

Before getting wet

Your surfboard comes with the lesson. Wear swimwear and bring a towel for afterward. Drinking water belongs in your bag, and sunscreen should go on before the session starts.

Party size

One booking accepts 1 to 4 travelers for private instruction. The starting adult rate applies with 3 or more adults. You shouldn't read that price condition as the smallest party the school accepts.

Meeting the instructor

Your meeting landmark is the Duke Paoa Kahanamoku statue on Waikiki Beach. The instructor comes there to meet you. You arrange the journey yourself because private transportation isn't part of this booking.

Conditions and enrollment

Weather can cause the session to be canceled. Insufficient traveler numbers can do so too. A booking for your own party doesn't remove those operating conditions, so the lesson isn't guaranteed to run in every case.

Ticket and refund

You receive immediate booking approval with a mobile ticket. Cancellation at least 24 hours before the start gives a full refund. There's no refund when you cancel inside that window.
