Options

Which option to book

The Sunset Horseback Ride follows the ranch trails to a coastal lookout. Starts are at 4:30 p.m. on selected days Monday to Saturday.

Option Departures
Sunset Horseback Ride 4:30 p.m., Mon to Sat
Means: Plan your own ride to the ranch for the 4:30 p.m. start.

The catch: The sunset ride needs at least 2 riders, so a solo booking doesn't meet the minimum.

The evening

How does the evening work?

The trail ride moves through the ranch's forest toward the coastal lookout before bringing you back to the office.

  1. 1
    Ranch arrival

You meet your guide at the Trails Office. A safety briefing comes before you mount for the trail ride.

  2. 2
    Forest trails

The ride follows mountain trails through forest at a walk. You may see cattle or wild pigs along the way.

  3. 3
    Coastal lookout

From the lookout you can see the coast below the ranch. It's the main view on this sunset ride.

  4. 4
    Back at the ranch

The trail ride ends where you began at Gunstock Ranch. Your journey back to the hotel is your own.

The trail ride lasts 90 minutes. It ends at the Trails Office, with travel to and from the ranch outside that time.

Pickup and meeting point

  • Getting there: Gunstock Ranch is between Laie and Kahuku. The Trails Office is your meeting point. Parking at the ranch is free.
  • Arrival time: Arrive 45 minutes before the ride for check-in. Each rider attends a 15-minute safety briefing before riding.
  • Clothing and cameras: Long pants and covered shoes are recommended. A light jacket helps if it's cold, and your phone or a small camera can come along.

Before you book

  • This is a walking ride throughout. You won't trot or canter on the trail to the lookout with your group.

Fit

Is this tour right for you?

The 90-minute walking ride suits couples or families with children aged 7 and up. Your booking needs at least two riders. It's a fit if you can reach the ranch yourself and want an outdoor evening. You won't need to give up the whole day.

For a morning farm visit with younger children, Hi Honey Farm accepts ages 3 and up from $135 per adult. Climb Works gives you eight paired ziplines from $203.65 per person if you prefer an aerial course.

Means: Book the 4:30 p.m. ride on a day with your own car so the ranch visit fits around your other stops.

Who it's not for

  • Solo bookings without a second rider
  • Children under 7 or riders over 235 lb
  • Pregnant travelers or those with spinal injuries
  • Riders who want to trot or canter

Good to know

Know before you go

Rider limits

Riders must be at least 7 and weigh no more than 235 lb. Each rider's weight is needed when booking. You can't leave that information until arrival at the ranch.

Booking acceptance

The ranch accepts bookings after you submit them. It's not an instant acceptance. At least two riders are needed, and the ranch contacts you about rescheduling if that minimum isn't met.

Clothes and bags

Wear long pants and covered shoes for the ride. Backpacks and large bags can't go on the trail. A small phone or camera is allowed, and bottled water costs extra.

Health limits

This ride isn't recommended during pregnancy or with spinal injuries. The same restriction applies to poor cardiovascular health. The walking pace doesn't remove those restrictions, even for an experienced rider.

Rain and cancellation

The ranch rides in rain unless conditions become unsafe. A ranch cancellation for unsafe weather brings another date or a full refund. Your own weather concerns follow the normal cancellation deadline.

Refund and ticket

Cancel at least 24 hours ahead for a full refund under this booking's terms. After that cutoff, no refund applies. Monday cancellations need email because the ranch closes Sundays, and your ticket is mobile only.
